Forrest Griffin – Chael Sonnen Set for this Year

There are plenty of matches taking shape for the remainder of the 2012 calendar year on the Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC and perhaps one match that will surprise many is scheduled to take place tentatively on the 29th of December when the former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin takes on the former No. 1 contender for the UFC Middleweight Championship Chael Sonnen. The announcement for this ambiguously titled ‘grudge weight fight’, a name given by Sonnen himself, was made on UFC Tonight that airs on FUEL TV.

Sonnen had lost his second straight UFC Middleweight Championship match to Anderson Silva at UFC 148 and there had been speculation that he would move to a different weight class in order to secure a title after hitting a stone wall in the form of Silva. Forrest Griffin, however, found himself in a similar sort of limbo, in spite of his win against Tito Ortiz on the same night. However, so below par was his performance that night that Dana White, the president of the UFC openly called for the former The Ultimate Fighter winner to hang up his gloves.

But now, it seems that his career has been given a lifeline of sorts with a rematch with Chael Sonnen, one of the most respected and revered fighters in the promotion. Griffin, who has been a former champion in the industry, admitted that his performance levels needed some lifting and maybe, a match against and old nemesis might just be the motivation he needed.

The match, however, is still not certain to take place on the 29th of December, although that is the date tentatively announced. The card on the night is expected to feature a UFC Heavyweight Championship match but the Forrest Griffin versus Chael Sonnen match up will happen this year.
